About me

My name is Kristin, and I am a book lover first and foremost, perhaps a film lover second. I enjoy a number of hobbies, and I am never satisfied with any one thing. I have tried my hand at origami, yoga, foreign language, foreign film, cult films, 1800s novels, Russian literature, knitting, and comedy. I find myself to be very restless when it comes to interests...I must always be in the process of trying something new, as hobbies become old and stale very quickly, but in a matter of time my passion for past hobbies rekindles itself.

I consider myself a student, but currently I am self-teaching during my year away from college. I spent a year at a university in Chicago and currently I reside in California keeping my military husband company before we both attend school in my home state, Wisconsin.

It is dreadfully hot here, so I spend most of my time in refuge from the sun reading all sorts of things on account of my discovery of the Sony eBook reader and Project Gutenburg. However, I am terribly nostalgic for legitimate schooling, and will be far happier when my husband can accompany me to college. Until that time, I read, watch a very limited amount of movies, and try my hand at writing non-fiction essays, poetry, and short stories.

I have a recommendation for you - Moon, starring Sam Rockwell and Kevin Spacey. It's bona fide sci-fi filmmaking, with an intimate story and deep themes. It's the film The Island would have been if Michael Bay didn't focus on making it an action extravaganza.

Turns out you're talking to the most qualified one can get in terms of amateur filmmaking (take a look at my stuff - http://www.youtube.com/user/PvtCaboose91)
Okay, if you just want something cheap to get you started, do just that. Head to an electronics store with a few hundred bucks handy, and seek out a quality camera within your price range. I recommend you get a camera which films on DV tapes - cameras which record to a hard-drive are dreadful. You'd have to erase your stuff eventually.

I haven't seen The Men that Stare at Goats. I desperately want to though. It looks hysterical.
Ughhh. No-one and nothing could get me to spend money on fuel to get to a cinema, then pay money to get a ticket for New Moon, then waste time watching it. It looks appalling.
In fact, as a reaction to the hype, I have a new t-shirt. It says "And Buffy slayed Edward. The end." Creative, eh?

Btw, I've recently been putting together diatribes against The Dark Knight. I used to love it, but the fanboy pandering and the unacceptable hype has caused me to look deeper, and scrutinise the movie... It's so incredibly flawed. In fact, my rating has dropped from a 4.5 to a 3. I plan to put together one long tirade against the movie and pass it off as a review. When I get around to it...

(Wow, finally you're About Me section has something of worth in it. I never actually knew your name until now... Haha)

So far this gap year of mine has been a tremendous success, having lost weight and had the time to watch dozens of movies. For the next two weeks you'll probably see a lot of reviews coming from me, but come November I plan to focus more on my own movie. So reviews will be few and far between at that stage.

There are a few Woody Allen films I have lying around thanks to recommendations from you. Crimes and Misdemeanors is one. I also have Match Point, Deconstructing Harry and Melinda & Melinda.

Enjoy my latest reviews.
It's only in the past four or five months that I've developed a definitive formula for my reviews. If you look at a lot of my older reviews, they were the product of my self-indulgent thesaurus period. These days I try to make my reviews as digestible and (ironically) short as possible - while still packing them with as much info as possible too.

Sheesh, you're living on a military base? That's intense! lol

Whatever Works was actually released quite a while back in America - back in June. It's out on DVD now. If you know where to look, you could probably download it via a torrent site. It's monstrously funny, believe me. Larry David is the perfect Woody Allen surrogate. And my review doesn't contain spoilers so you could easily have a read before watching. In fact most critic reviews spoil more than I do.

Things over here are good. I've had this year off before I embark on Uni next year, annnnd managed to lose an astonishing 34kg (that's like 75 pounds).
Meanwhile, I've managed on average one review a day for a while now. Unfortunately, I've been watching a lot of the fluffy stuff from this year. Like Year One and Dance Flick, films which I'm glad I've seen + reviewed because I'll never have to think about them again. Lol.

G'day!
Just wanted to let you know I saw Woody Allen's latest flick - Whatever Works - and loved it. It's better than Vicky Cristina Barcelona in my humble opinion :) Expect a review sometime soon.

Have a good one.

G'day g'day!
I just caught a screening of Manhattan - the Woody Allen film, that is. Very unique I must say. I've only seen two of Woody's movies, the other being Annie Hall. Seeing as that you seem to like the guy, what are the Woody Allen films you'd most recommend? (I have a full year to myself...need ideas for movie-watching. Lol)

Cheers.

Hey buddy!
My review of Magnolia is complete. Took me a few hours. Enjoy!
Posted : 1 year, 1 month ago at Oct 11 18:47
Yeah, Magnolia is a fantastic flick! I found it in the shops for really cheap so I decided to buy it. Then I finally watched it. My review is on its way. I spent about an hour working on it last night. Still not finished. Will be soon though.
My favourite character was probably John C. Reilly as Jim the cop. He was just so interesting.

Heya.
I decided to send a friend request. You seem like a person with a head on their shoulders. Really appreciate your support on a few of my reviews :P

Cheers!!

About my collections

As of now I do not have much of a chance to see films, and rarely I watch anything new. I've been limited to watching my husband's extensive Disney collection (why he has so many, I'll never know), Pride and Prejudice, and the television series' The Office, Reno 911!, and South Park...but these are getting so old! I cannot wait until I am living in a bigger, more lively city so that I can see all of the new and upcoming films I please.

As such I have become a much more avid reader, enjoying most frequently 1800's novels and the occasional Kurt Vonnegut book. I find it so hard to rate novels, because there are so many different categories it is impossible to correctly plaster a statistic onto it! Disregard my ratings, and just know that I very much love classic books, rarely do I find joy in anything modern, and I have such a prejudice, one that I do apologize for, over those who declare as their favorite book the Twilight series or Harry Potter! Pick up Pride and Prejudice, or Cat's Cradle, or 1984, because while the prior novels might be - erm - entertaining, in a way, they in no way improve your mind. Of course that could be thoroughly debated, but it is of my humble opinion that there are so many tremendously important and affecting novels that it is a waste of time to read and re-read silly novels like I mentioned above. Call me a snob if you like, but I find an Anthony Trollope novel far more engrossing than any teenage vampire story. That's all I have to say on the subject.

I don't normally find time for video games, since if I do have the time to play one, my time would be better spent watching a film or reading a book!
